What to Watch For After Tartar Cleaning

Taking good care of oral health after tartar cleaning is important for a smooth recovery. Regular dental checkups and good hygiene habits also help prevent tartar from forming again. Mild pain and sensitivity after the procedure are usually temporary; if they persist beyond a few days, a dentist should be consulted.

Tartar is a buildup that forms when plaque hardens, typically appearing yellow or brown along the gumline. Inadequate oral hygiene, consumption of sugary and acidic foods, variations in saliva composition, age, and genetic predisposition are the main contributing factors. Left untreated, it can cause discoloration, gum inflammation, increased cavity risk, bad breath, and sensitivity due to gum recession.

Professional cleaning prevents bacterial buildup and reduces the risk of cavities and gum disease; the procedure typically takes between 30 minutes and an hour depending on the severity of the buildup.

In the first 24 hours after the procedure, cold compresses can be applied for mild swelling, soft foods like yogurt, purees, and soup are recommended, and prescribed antiseptic mouthwash should be used. During this time, very hot or cold beverages, hard or crunchy foods, and sugary items should be avoided.

Sensitivity after the procedure is normal and can be managed with prescribed pain relievers, warm saltwater rinses, and soft-bristled brushes. Desensitizing toothpaste and fluoride treatments also provide relief. Diet should favor soft, lukewarm foods with adequate water intake, while hard foods, extreme temperature drinks, and acidic or sugary items should be avoided.

For oral hygiene, brushing with a soft-bristled brush in circular motions for at least two minutes daily, along with daily flossing and antibacterial mouthwash, is recommended. Patients should visit the dentist twice within six months after the procedure, then annually, use fluoride toothpaste, and limit sugar intake.

Signs of infection such as redness, swelling, persistent pain, bad odor, or fever should prompt immediate dental attention. Recovery generally takes a few days, and the whitening effect on teeth as well as any temporary sensation of gaps between teeth typically resolve over time.
