Bruxism Treatment in Ankara

Bruxism, commonly known as teeth clenching or grinding, is a widespread problem that can seriously damage teeth and the jaw joint and cause neck and headaches. In some patients it occurs only at night, while in others it happens throughout the day. Conditions such as Parkinson's, dementia, epilepsy, a stressful lifestyle, psychological issues, insomnia and poor nutrition increase the risk.

Before treatment, the dentist examines the patient, confirms the diagnosis by assessing symptoms, and determines a treatment plan suited to the patient's expectations. This process usually involves addressing the underlying trigger through medication, a night guard, or filling-based procedures.

Drug therapy, using muscle relaxants, is typically applied for bruxism linked to psychological or stomach-related causes. A night guard, custom-made from an impression of the mouth, reduces grinding and prevents damage to the teeth. A masseter filling weakens the jaw-clenching muscles, reducing clenching force, and with regular application can help eliminate the habit.

Teeth clenching happens involuntarily during sleep or in the daytime, and is usually easy for a dentist to spot through the development of the masseter muscles, wear on the tooth surface, and gum lesions. Bruxism seen in childhood and adolescence can resolve on its own over time, while in adults it generally requires treatment.

Untreated bruxism can lead to cysts and sores in the mouth, cracked enamel, tooth sensitivity, neck and headaches, chronic fatigue, and jaw joint problems. A masseter filling is not permanent and wears off after about four to five months, but with repeated applications the clenching reflex in the muscles can gradually disappear.
