Sedation Dentistry in Ankara: Healthy Teeth Without Fear or Stress
June 6, 2026
Sedation is the use of specific medications by specialists to bring a patient into a state of deep relaxation and temporary sleep; it should not be confused with general anesthesia. Under sedation, consciousness isn't fully lost — the patient can still respond to simple commands — but afterward they won't remember the sounds of needles or instruments.
The key difference between sedation and general anesthesia is that under sedation breathing continues on its own and recovery is quick right after the procedure; under general anesthesia, consciousness is fully lost, the patient is connected to a ventilator, and a fully equipped operating room with a longer observation period is required.
This method is especially suitable for adults with dental anxiety, young children who can't stay still in the chair, patients with a strong gag reflex, individuals with special needs, and patients undergoing multiple implants or surgical procedures in a single session.
In our clinic, the process begins with an assessment of the patient's general health and finalizing the treatment plan. Sedation is administered by an anesthesiologist and technician; an IV line is placed, medication is given in a controlled dose, and pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are monitored throughout. After waking, the patient rests briefly before going home accompanied by a companion.
The biggest advantages of this method are that treatments normally requiring several sessions can be completed in one, dental fear is permanently overcome since no pain or sound is felt, and the dentist can focus better on the work thanks to the patient's complete stillness.
Patients must fast for at least 6–8 hours before sedation, come with a companion on the day of the procedure, and avoid driving. With this safe method, administered under an anesthesiologist's supervision at our clinic, achieving a healthy smile without fear or stress is possible.
