Signs of a Failed Implant

Signs of a failed implant include post-procedure pain, bleeding, and the implant becoming loose. These symptoms should prompt an immediate visit to a dentist, since delaying can allow the problem to worsen and make treatment more difficult. Issues can arise either during the treatment process or after it's completed.

Mild complications like pain and swelling after the procedure are expected to resolve on their own within a certain period. However, if these symptoms persist for a long time or worsen, it may indicate inflammation in the area or improper technique. Key warning signs include pain and tenderness, swelling around the tooth, gaps forming, bleeding, and movement of the implant.

Failure of the implant to fuse with the jawbone (osseointegration failure) can result from choosing the wrong implant or unsuitable bone conditions. The first sign is usually pain in the area that doesn't decrease as expected over time; if accompanied by redness, swelling and tenderness, a dentist should be consulted. Movement of the implant is a clear indicator of a fusion problem.

Because implant treatment involves surgery and sometimes bone strengthening, it carries an infection risk; poor post-procedure oral hygiene increases this risk further. Not smoking, avoiding carbonated drinks, rinsing frequently with salt water, and not touching the area with hands are precautions that reduce infection risk.

Mild infections can often be resolved with medication and good oral hygiene, while advanced infections may require removing the implant. When symptoms like swelling, pain or redness appear, seeking prompt dental care prevents the problem from escalating.
