Bruxism Treatment

Bruxism treatment covers various methods and medications aimed at improving teeth clenching and grinding. If left untreated, this condition can have serious consequences, but options such as medication, dental appliances, and pain-relieving massage techniques are available.

Before starting treatment, the underlying cause needs to be investigated; factors like stress, psychological conditions and stomach ailments can trigger bruxism. Medication is generally aimed at treating the underlying condition, but the clenching habit itself may persist even after treatment.

A night guard, custom-fitted from an impression taken by the dentist, is an effective method particularly for reducing nighttime clenching, and can also be worn during the day if needed. Bruxism exercises alone aren't enough, but they can help relax the masseter muscle and jaw, reducing headaches.

A masseter (bruxism) filling weakens the chewing muscles through an injectable filling; the procedure is done via injection and starts showing effects within a few days. A follow-up check is done about ten days later; repeated every four to six months, this treatment can help permanently reduce the grinding reflex.

While the exact cause of bruxism is unknown, stress, fatigue, epilepsy, dementia, Parkinson's, stomach conditions, genetic predisposition and high caffeine intake are considered risk factors. It's also linked to sleep apnea. Bruxism seen in youth can resolve on its own over time, while cases that appear after adolescence tend to be more permanent.

Symptoms include increasing tooth pain, wear on the tooth surface, ear pain, jaw clenching or locking, strengthening of the masseter muscles, jaw misalignment, and tooth fractures. Specialist dentist Songül Mirzaoğlu notes that clenching can lead to overdeveloped masseter muscles, enamel cracks, jaw joint disorders and gum inflammation; the treatment plan, including night guards and masseter procedures, is customized to each patient.
