Oral and dental health in childhood lays the foundation for future health habits. The common belief that 'a new tooth will grow in anyway' is a major misconception that overlooks how baby tooth decay can affect a child's nutrition, speech development, and even the health of their permanent teeth. Untreated cavities can lead to severe pain, abscesses, and premature tooth loss.
Baby teeth aren't just for chewing; they act as natural space holders for permanent teeth. If a baby tooth is lost prematurely, neighboring teeth shift into the gap, which can cause serious crowding issues later on. Early loss of front teeth can also negatively affect speech development. Because baby teeth have much thinner enamel than adult teeth, decay can progress rapidly enough to reach the nerve tissue within just a few weeks.
The core principle of pediatric dentistry is to preserve the tooth without traumatizing the child. Depending on the severity of decay, treatment may include tooth-colored or child-preferred colorful/glitter composite fillings, or pulpotomy and pediatric root canal treatment for cases where decay has reached the nerve. The filling materials used naturally dissolve along with the baby tooth's roots as the permanent tooth emerges.
For highly anxious, very young, or special-needs children, sedation under the supervision of an anesthesiologist allows all treatments to be completed in a single session without psychological trauma.
Preventive measures that can be taken before decay forms include fissure sealants, which close the grooves in molars, and fluoride varnish, which strengthens tooth enamel; fluoride varnish is recommended 2 to 4 times a year.
'Bottle caries,' seen in children aged 1 to 3, result from falling asleep with sugary milk in a bottle or from not cleaning the mouth after nighttime feeding. To prevent this, a child's mouth should be wiped with a clean cloth or finger brush after nighttime feeding.
