Gum Swelling from Tooth Decay

Gum swelling is often overlooked but is an important indicator for both oral and overall health. Healthy gums are a key part of a smile's aesthetics; swollen or inflamed gums both affect appearance and can be an early sign of gum disease.

Main causes of swelling include plaque and tartar buildup from poor oral care, untreated gingivitis progressing to periodontitis, decayed teeth, food particles trapped between teeth (especially around wisdom teeth), hormonal changes (common during pregnancy), and side effects of certain medications. Deficiencies in B and C vitamins can also make gums sensitive and prone to inflammation.

Fungal, bacterial or viral infections, as well as choosing the wrong oral care products, can also contribute to swelling. Untreated gum swelling can progress to serious gum disease and even tooth loss, which is why early diagnosis and regular dental checkups matter greatly.

For prevention and treatment, regular brushing, flossing, antiseptic mouthwash, professional scaling and a balanced diet (with adequate B and C vitamin intake) are effective methods. When caught early, gingivitis can typically be treated with regular professional cleaning and good home care.

Gum swelling should never be ignored — a dentist should be consulted promptly. If decay is the cause, treating it (with a filling or root canal) is the key step to resolving the swelling; in inflamed cases, dentist-prescribed antibiotics along with proper oral hygiene measures are used.
