How Is Digital Smile Design Done?
March 14, 2026
Digital smile design is a technology-driven planning process that analyzes not just the teeth but the lips, gums, and overall facial features as a whole. The goal isn't simply white teeth, but a natural smile tailored to the face's golden ratio, skin tone, and character.
The process begins with professional photo and video sessions in a studio setting, capturing the face from different angles, while talking, and while smiling — because how teeth look in motion, not just at rest, is the key factor.
Instead of traditional impression materials, a small intraoral camera then performs a 3D digital scan, creating a model with millimeter precision that forms the basis of the design. The collected data is fed into specialized software, which reconstructs tooth length, width, and shape to match the patient's facial features.
The most critical stage is the mock-up trial: the digital design is turned into a physical model using 3D printers and placed in the mouth without any work done to the teeth. This lets the patient see and test the shape, length, and lip harmony of their new teeth firsthand in the mirror — any detail they're unhappy with can be adjusted before touching the actual teeth.
Compared to traditional planning, digital smile design offers the ability to preview the result before treatment starts, millimeter-level precision, active patient involvement in the design process, and a golden-ratio approach tailored to each person's facial features.
