Treatment for Gum Recession

Gum recession is a common dental problem in which the gums gradually pull away from the teeth, exposing the tooth roots. It is not just a cosmetic issue — it carries serious health risks and can occur at any age.

The main causes include incorrect, overly aggressive brushing technique, periodontal disease, hormonal changes such as those during pregnancy, tobacco use, and misaligned teeth.

Because symptoms develop slowly, they can go unnoticed for a while: bleeding while brushing or eating, gum sensitivity and swelling, teeth appearing longer than usual, color changes, painful chewing, a sense of looseness in the teeth, exposed roots, and bad breath are among the signs.

Age, tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, genetic predisposition, and misaligned teeth are all risk factors. Treatment options include professional tartar cleaning, gum surgery, implant or graft procedures, and orthodontic treatment when needed.

To protect gum health, dentists recommend at least two checkups a year, gentle brushing with a soft-bristled brush, daily flossing, a diet rich in vitamin C, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and managing stress.

With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, gum recession can be halted and improved to some degree. Correct oral hygiene at home and dentist-recommended rinses can help, but a lasting solution always requires a visit to a dentist.
