What Helps with Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs when the parts of the teeth that should be covered by gum tissue become exposed, often causing sensitivity and discomfort. A range of options exist to stop and treat it, from simple measures applied at home to medication and surgical intervention.

Possible causes include bacteria, poor oral care, smoking, hormonal changes, genetic factors, and diabetes. Hard toothbrushes, acidic drinks, crooked teeth, and tooth decay are additional risk factors.

Symptoms include reddened or whitened gums, bleeding, sensitivity to hot and cold, bad breath, loose-feeling teeth, and teeth that appear longer than normal.

Supportive measures that can be applied at home include maintaining good oral hygiene, gently massaging with aloe vera or natural oils, rinsing with green tea, and using salt-water rinses. While soothing, these are not a substitute for actual treatment.

Lasting treatment may involve tartar removal, medication when needed, and in more advanced cases, surgical intervention or bone grafting. For this reason, anyone noticing symptoms should see a dentist without delay.
