Dental Bone Loss

Dental bone loss, medically known as alveolar bone resorption, refers to the loss of the bone tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth. This condition can seriously affect both dental and overall oral health and often leads to tooth loss.
The most common cause is advanced gum disease, known as periodontitis; inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissue gradually destroys bone tissue. Habits such as teeth grinding (bruxism) and excessive force applied to the teeth can also damage bone tissue. Neglecting regular dental cleaning and oral care similarly paves the way for periodontal disease and subsequent bone loss.
Early diagnosis is critical to halting bone loss; regular checkups and radiographic examinations allow early-stage detection. Periodontal treatment — including tartar removal, root planing, and surgical intervention when needed — can stop its progression. Lifestyle changes such as regular brushing, flossing, antiseptic mouthwash use, quitting smoking, and healthy eating also contribute positively to the process.
In advanced bone loss, bone grafting or tissue regeneration methods can be used to help restore lost bone volume. Tooth loss can also contribute to bone loss over time by reducing stimulation of the jawbone; in such cases, dental implants offer an effective solution by stimulating the jaw and helping preserve bone tissue.
For patients with insufficient bone density, bone density is assessed through detailed radiographic examination before implant treatment; if density is inadequate, bone grafting or augmentation procedures provide the support needed for the implant. Once healing after grafting is complete, the implant is surgically placed, and after a healing period, a prosthetic tooth is fitted on top.
Treatment duration varies by case: periodontal treatments can take a few weeks to a few months, bone grafting and regenerative treatments a few months to a year, and implant placement with healing generally a few months. Bone loss can be painless in its early stages, but pain and sensitivity may appear in advanced gum disease and tooth loss. With appropriate treatment and preventive measures, bone loss can be halted and, in some cases, partially reversed.
