Your Checklist for the First 48 Hours After an Implant
October 13, 2026The success of implant surgery depends not only on surgical skill but also on the patient's care in the first 48 hours. This short window is critical for stopping bleeding, controlling swelling and protecting the blood clot. Following the checklist below step by step will make your recovery much smoother.
The First 30–60 Minutes: Controlling Bleeding
- Bite down firmly on the sterile gauze placed over the area for 30 minutes, then remove and discard it.
- Swallow any saliva or light blood that collects in your mouth; never spit it out.
- Avoid rinsing your mouth, drinking through a straw and spitting for the first 24 hours — these actions can dislodge the clot.
The First 24 Hours: Managing Swelling and Pain
- Apply an ice pack to the cheek over the surgical area, 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off.
- Sleep with your head elevated on an extra pillow — this helps reduce swelling.
- Take the pain medication and antibiotics prescribed by your dentist on schedule, without skipping doses.
The First 48 Hours: What to Eat
- Choose lukewarm, soft foods: soup, yoghurt, purées, pudding.
- Avoid very hot, very cold, acidic, spicy and grainy foods (rice, sesame, etc.).
- Don't chew hard foods on the side where surgery was performed; use the other side if possible.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least a week — both directly interfere with the bone fusion (osseointegration) process.
When Should You Call the Clinic Right Away?
Mild swelling, bruising and a sensation of pressure are entirely normal in the first 48 hours. However, if swelling increases rather than subsides after 48 hours, you develop a fever above 38°C (100.4°F), experience uncontrolled bleeding, or your pain worsens despite prescribed painkillers, call our clinic right away.
