Does Getting a Dental Implant Hurt? The 5 Questions Patients Ask Most

October 26, 2026

Dental implants, today's most comfortable and durable solution for missing teeth, stand out as the structure closest to a natural tooth. Yet the concern patients raise most often isn't about aesthetics or health risks — it's usually this: "Does getting an implant hurt?"

As Dent Ümitköy, serving in Ankara, we answered the 5 questions our patients ask most often about jaw surgery and implantology, in light of the comfortable technologies modern dentistry offers.

1. Question: Is Pain Felt During the Implant Procedure?

The biggest fear patients have about implant treatment is feeling pain during the procedure. The short answer: Absolutely not.

  • The Comfort of Local Anesthesia: The implant operation is performed under effective local anesthesia administered by the jaw surgeon. Since the treatment area is fully numbed, the patient feels no pain or discomfort whatsoever during the operation. Feeling only a slight pressure or vibration is perfectly normal.
  • Sedation or General Anesthesia Option: For patients with severe dental anxiety (dentophobia), the operation can also be planned under sedation or general anesthesia.

2. Question: What Is the Healing Period Like After the Implant, and Is There Pain?

After the surgical procedure ends and the anesthesia wears off, feeling a mild degree of pain, soreness or tightness is expected, as with any surgical intervention.

  • Physician-Supervised Medication: At Dent Ümitköy, the pain relievers and antibiotics prescribed to our patients after the operation make this process go very comfortably.
  • Swelling (Edema) and Bruising: Mild swelling (edema) may appear in the treated area. Applying a cold compress (ice) within the first 48 hours keeps this swelling to a minimum, and it disappears completely within 3-4 days.

3. Question: How Long Does It Take for the Implant to Fuse with the Jawbone (Osseointegration)?

After the implant screw is placed in the jawbone, it needs a certain amount of time to fuse with the bone (osseointegration). This process forms the foundation of biological healing.

  • How Long Does It Take?: Depending on the patient's jawbone quality and the treated area (lower or upper jaw), this period generally ranges between 2 and 4 months.
  • Are You Left Without a Tooth During This Period?: No. Especially for front-tooth aesthetics, temporary removable or fixed dentures are applied so our patients don't withdraw from social life, supporting the process aesthetically.

4. Question: Can Implants Be Done for Everyone? Is There an Age Limit?

Implant treatment is a safe method that can be applied to almost any individual whose general health is in good condition.

  • Age Limit: It can be comfortably applied to young and adult individuals who have completed jaw and facial development, generally over the age of 18. There is no upper age limit as such, as long as any chronic conditions are kept under control.
  • Chronic Conditions: In diabetic patients, implants can be placed as long as blood sugar levels are balanced. For patients with severe osteoporosis or heart conditions, the treatment plan is shaped with the approval of the relevant specialist physicians.

5. Question: How Long Does an Implant Last? Can It Be Used for a Lifetime?

A properly planned implant treatment, made with quality materials and well cared for, can be used for a lifetime.

  • The Importance of Oral Hygiene: Although implants are artificial, the gums around them can be susceptible to disease (peri-implantitis) just like natural teeth. Brushing twice a day, flossing and using an interdental brush are essential.
  • Regular Check-ups: Coming to Dent Ümitköy for a clinical check-up at least twice a year catches potential problems early and extends the lifespan of your implant.
