Strengthening a Tooth After Root Canal: Fiber Post and Core

A tooth that undergoes root canal treatment loses its blood vessels and nerves, which makes it gradually lose flexibility and become more fragile over time. Fiber post treatment addresses this by reinforcing the tooth from its root.

A fiber post is a small support element made of glass fibers that's placed into the tooth's root canal. Thanks to a flexibility close to that of natural tooth structure, it prevents the root from fracturing during chewing; unlike metal posts, it doesn't create a gray reflection, so it looks aesthetically excellent under zirconia or porcelain crowns, and being fully biocompatible, it carries no allergic reaction risk.

After the post is placed, the visible portion of the tooth is rebuilt using special composite materials — this is called the 'core,' and it forms the foundation the crown will later attach to.

The older metal post method risks cracking the root under pressure, can cause a gray or bruised look at the gum line, and attaches only mechanically; a fiber post, by contrast, flexes in harmony with the tooth to protect the root, matches the natural tooth color for a more aesthetic result, bonds chemically to the tooth, and can typically be applied in a single clinical visit.

The procedure begins by preparing the top of the root canal of a completed root-canal-treated tooth for the post; the fiber post is then cemented into the canal with special adhesives, the surrounding area is built up with durable composite filling to shape the core, and finally the tooth is ready to receive a crown. This approach aims to protect teeth for the long term by reinforcing them from within, rather than extracting them.
