Closing Gaps Between Teeth with Veneers: Diastema Treatment

Diastema, most commonly seen between the two upper front teeth, can actually occur anywhere in the mouth. Genetic factors, a mismatch between tooth and jaw size, or gum issues are the main causes. For adult patients who don't want braces, veneers are an important alternative.

The biggest advantage of closing gaps with veneers is speed: while braces take 1-2 years, veneer treatment is typically completed in just 7-10 days. It also requires minimal intervention — only a very thin layer is removed from the front surface of the teeth, sometimes none at all — preserving the natural tooth structure.

Because porcelain surfaces are smooth, they resist staining from tea, coffee, or cigarettes and provide lasting whiteness. Their light-transmitting quality gives them a natural look that's hard to distinguish from real teeth.

The treatment process starts with a digital analysis: a 3D scan of the teeth is taken and the smile design is prepared digitally. This is followed by a mock-up trial where the finished result is tested in the mouth, then any minimal, precise tooth preparation is done, and finally custom-made porcelain veneers are bonded in place with special adhesives.

The main difference between veneers and orthodontics is time and scope: veneers are completed in 2-3 sessions while orthodontics can take 12-24 months; veneers can also correct tooth color, while orthodontics only realigns the teeth. Veneer results are highly permanent, whereas gaps closed by orthodontics can reopen without a retainer.
