Retention Treatment with Clear Retainers - What Is Retention Treatment?

The process applied after orthodontic treatment ends, to keep teeth in their new position, is called retention treatment. This stage is critical to making the treatment's results permanent, and its duration varies from person to person.
Clear retainers are among the most commonly chosen methods during retention. They begin right after treatment ends; worn for about 22 hours a day in the first months, use is gradually reduced to nights only. The overall process can range from six months to several years depending on the person's dental structure.
Besides clear retainers, fixed or removable retainers and night plates may also be used during retention. Fixed retainers are usually placed on the lower front teeth, while removable ones are preferred for the upper jaw. The effectiveness of these tools depends heavily on patient compliance and regular check-ups.
Clear aligner treatment (wireless orthodontics) begins with a detailed exam and digital planning; custom-made aligners are then replaced roughly every two weeks to gradually move teeth into the desired position. Regular check-ups are carried out throughout, with adjustments made as needed.
The main advantages of this method include a less noticeable appearance, comfort inside the mouth, in some cases a shorter treatment period, and predictable results thanks to 3D planning. However, this method may not be suitable for patients with severe jaw disorders, heavy dental crowding, or an inability to comply with treatment.
Simple cases take 6-12 months, while more complex ones can take up to 18 months. Regularly cleaning the aligners with a soft brush and lukewarm water is necessary both to prevent bad breath and to preserve the aligner's clarity.
