Periodontology and Gum Disease - The Most Common Dental Disease

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry concerned with diagnosing, treating, and preventing gum disease. The effects of these conditions are not limited to the mouth and can also affect overall health. Since treatment is far more successful when caught early, it's important to see a dentist without delay at the first sign of symptoms.

The main causes of gum disease include bacterial plaque that builds up on teeth not cleaned regularly, smoking and tobacco use, genetic predisposition, improper brushing technique, hormonal changes such as pregnancy and menopause, and side effects of certain medications.

Redness and swelling of the gums, bleeding while brushing, gum recession, persistent bad breath, pain while chewing, and loose teeth are among the most common symptoms. Recent research has also pointed to a possible link between gum disease and certain types of cancer.

Gingivitis, the mildest form, is usually caused by plaque buildup and can be easily prevented with regular hygiene. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis; chronic periodontitis is more common at older ages, while aggressive periodontitis can cause early bone loss in young adults. In some cases, periodontitis can also appear as a sign of systemic diseases such as diabetes.

Treatment usually starts with professional removal of tartar and plaque. In advanced cases, surgical methods such as gingivectomy, flap surgery, bone surgery, or mucogingival surgery may be required. Since every patient's condition differs, the treatment plan should be tailored individually.

The most effective preventive measures are regular dental check-ups, proper brushing technique, and flossing. A balanced diet with adequate vitamin C and calcium intake, along with fluoride-containing products, also supports gum health.
