5 Golden Rules for Long-Lasting Zirconia Bridges

The weakest point of a zirconia bridge is underneath the pontic — the section replacing the missing tooth — an area a toothbrush can't reach but bacteria love to hide in. Standard brushing isn't enough; special bridge floss (Superfloss) or a water flosser must be used to clean underneath it, otherwise the supporting teeth can develop decay or gum recession.

While zirconia is highly resistant, it has less flexibility than natural teeth. Habits like cracking nuts with your teeth, opening packaging, or tearing thread can cause cracks in the porcelain layer — teeth should never be used as tools.

Unconsciously clenching or grinding teeth at night can loosen the bridge's cement or crack the porcelain. If you have a clenching habit, regularly wearing a custom night guard absorbs the vertical pressure on the bridge and protects the restoration.

Although zirconia itself doesn't decay, if the gum tissue supporting the bridge becomes inflamed, the bridge's lifespan shortens; gum recession exposes the natural tooth margin, hurting both aesthetics and causing sensitivity. Brush teeth twice a day with circular motions from gum to tooth, and see your dentist immediately if you notice bleeding or discoloration.

Finally, bridge problems often go unnoticed until pain sets in, whereas a professional exam can catch fit issues or cement wear early. Checkups and professional cleaning twice a year prevent small issues from becoming costly problems.
