Zirconia vs. Porcelain Crowns: A Comparison
October 13, 2026The most common dilemma for patients deciding on a crown is whether to choose zirconia or metal-supported porcelain. Both materials have been used safely in dentistry for years, but the differences between them directly affect the decision depending on where the crown will go.
Metal-Supported Porcelain Crowns
Made by layering porcelain over a metal substructure. It's highly durable and a cost-effective option, especially for back teeth. However, since the metal substructure blocks light, the tooth can look duller and more opaque than natural enamel. As the gum recedes slightly over time, a thin gray line (a metal shadow) can appear at the edge of the crown.
Zirconia Crowns
Made from a metal-free, white ceramic substructure. Because its light transmission is very close to natural enamel, it gives a far more aesthetic result, especially on front teeth. It doesn't create a gray shadow at the gumline and has excellent biocompatibility. In terms of durability, it matches — and in some formulations exceeds — metal-supported porcelain.
Which One Should You Choose, and When?
- Front Teeth and the Smile Line: Since aesthetic expectations are higher here, zirconia almost always gives a better result.
- Back Molars: Both materials can be used safely in this high-chewing-force area; if budget is the priority, metal-supported porcelain is a reasonable choice.
- Patients with Metal Allergies: Zirconia is the only safe option for patients with sensitivity or allergy to metal.
